Vikramshila Setu, a vital 4.88 km long bridge over the River Ganga connecting NH-33 (Old NH-80) and NH-31, serves as a lifeline for Bhagalpur and adjoining regions. Following the collapse of the 34-meter navigational span of the bridge, traffic movement was completely disrupted, severely affecting public mobility and movement of essential services. Realising the urgency of the situation, the Government of Bihar requested immediate assistance from the Ministry of Defence for deployment of emergency bridging solutions to facilitate movement of light vehicles, and essential services. Ministry of Defence entrusted the restoration works to Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
Consequently, BRO has undertaken the challenging task of launching these Bailey Bridges to restore connectivity and provide immediate relief to the affected population of North & South Bihar on war footing. Construction Team of Project Swastik has launched 170 Feet Bailey bridge in quick time. In addition to the presently launched, additional two Bailey bridges as requisitioned by State Government will also be launched over distressed spans of the Vikramshila Setu shortly.
Shri Jitendra Prasad, VSM, Additional Director General Border Roads (East) visited the bridge site on 20 May 2026. During his inspection visit, Shri Jitendra Prasad, VSM expressed his satisfaction with the fast pace of construction of 170 feet Bailey bridge and assured the State administration of expeditious construction of balance two bridges. Before visiting the bridge site, the ADG also had an interaction with Mr Pankaj Kumar Pal, Secretary RCD at Patna. Shri Jitendra Kumar, MD BRPNNL and Shri Bipin Kumar Chand, Superintending Engineer, BRO attended the meeting.
The State Administration has also expressed profound gratitude to the Border Roads Organisation for its timely intervention and fast paced construction efforts. Restoration of connectivity is expected to greatly ease transportation hardships, ensure continuity of essential services and provide much-needed succor to the local populace. This achievement once again highlights Border Roads Organisation’s capability to respond rapidly and effectively in times of infrastructural emergencies and reinforces the organisation’s enduring commitment towards nation-building.
